Breeding Philosophy
When you first saw the home page of this website, the first thing to draw your eye (besides Taz’s beautiful point) was probably the banner that says “breeding a Brittany for the field, show ring, and the home. Those aren’t just some arbitrary words I put on the homepage to sell puppies. They are an ethos, a mission. I’m not breeding dogs just for the heck of it. I’m breeding dogs to produce a BETTER dog for the field, show ring, and home. Better being the key word. If I don’t believe a breeding is going to better what I have now, the breeding will not occur. I will never produce a litter that I wouldn’t be proud and excited to own a puppy out of.
The field is the first part of my mission statement. That is hardly a coincidence. When someone decides a Brittany is the breed for them, it is almost always because that breed was their favorite out of a group of pointing breeds. I am no exception. All of my dogs have pedigrees loaded with dogs that have proven themselves in the field time and time again. I am a hunter first and foremost, and no dog will be in my breeding program that won’t go out and vigorously search out birds and point them.
The show ring is critical to today’s Brittany. The Brittany standard exists for a reason, and I will always strive to produce a dog that adheres to these standards as closely as possible. There are many top breeders nowadays that produce larger dogs to give them an “edge” in the field trials. This will never be a consideration here at Golden Gun Bird Dogs. The Brittanys have more dual champions (dogs that are champions both in the field and the show ring) than all other breeds combined. That is something that should be celebrated and built upon. I don’t know who gets credited with the quote, but it has been said that “life is too short to hunt with an ugly dog”. I couldn’t agree more.
The last, but certainly not least part of the mission statement is the home. Now, anyone who has owned a Brittany will tell you that you can’t completely mitigate that energy in the home, especially the first two years or so. An unexercised Brittany is always going to be destructive. However, I fully believe that once a dog matures, they should be a joy to have in the house. I do not want to produce dogs that have to be outside in a kennel because they are unmanageable in-doors. As of this writing, there aren’t even any outdoor kennels here on the premises. All the dogs live indoors with me.
You now know my guiding principles here at Golden Gun Bird Dogs. Please feel free click on the contact us tab to call or email me and discuss any aspects of my breeding program further. I am always happy to talk dogs, and would love to find out if you are a good fit for one of my puppies.
